About the Facility
The Western Tidewater Regional Jail (VPRJ)is a facility with a rated housing capacity of 290 and an expanded housing capacity of 612 male and female inmates. Located on a 35-acre site on Rte. 143 in James City County, the jail opened in June of 1997 and serves the counties of York and James City and the cities of Williamsburg and Poquoson. The primary mission of the facility is to provide a safe and secure environment for the detention of persons lawfully admitted to the facility by the four participating jurisdictions.
The Regional Jail recognizes it is an integral part of the community and has a role to play in the enhancement of the area’s quality of life. We continually strive to ensure that the facility operates in a cost-efficient and cost-effective manner. We recognize our client base includes the local criminal justice system whose agencies interact with the facility on a daily basis, and that we must endeavor to assist them as they perform their duties and responsibilities. The Regional Jail is also committed to providing inmates with the opportunity to leave the facility in a better condition than they were in prior to incarceration.

Inmate dies at Western Tidewater Regional Jail; appears to be suicide
SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — An inmate was found dead early Wednesday morning in a minimum security dorm at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail.
Jail officials say 54-year-old Larry D. Drommerhausen appears to have taken his own life.
